Elders

Joseph O. Anderson was born and raised in Gary, Indiana. Joseph came to Washington, DC in 1986 to attend Howard University where he studied chemistry. He met his wife, Maria in 1993. They were married in 1996 at the Schrader Lane church in Nashville, TN. Joseph was baptized into Christ in 1995 at the Southeast church, and later attended the Beltway and Prince George's congregations where he served as teacher and director of educational programs. The family came to Silver Spring congregation in 2009. Joseph served as a deacon from 2011 to 2015 and has worked very closely with the Youth and Adult Development ministries. Joseph's professional career includes supporting the US Department of Defense in areas of Emergency Preparedness and Counter-Terrorism. He currently works on medical countermeasures to prevent, mitigate, and respond to chemical warfare exposure. The Andersons have two daughters, Cameron and Chloe.

Michael D. Anglin became a Christian at the Arlington (VA) Church of Christ, where he also met his wife, Ruth. He was encouraged to go into full-time preaching. He attended the University of Virginia, then graduated from David Lipscomb College (now University) in Nashville, Tennessee. While there, he also preached for congregation in the Nashville suburbs. Later, brother Anglin moved to Tiptonville, TN, and while preaching for that church, he attended Harding Graduate School of Religion and earned a Master's degree. He also preached for one of the congregations in Clarksville, TN and attended Austin Peay State College. When the Anglin's moved to the DC area, Mike first preached for the Springfield (VA) congregation. Then they moved to Pennsylvania where Mike preached for the King of Prussia congregation and taught part time (Greek and Bible) at Northeastern Christian College (now Ohio Valley University). The Anglin's moved to Silver Spring in 2000 and Mike served as full-time minister until retiring in 2008. He and Ruth have two adult children and six grandchildren.

Jackie R. Gill grew up in Washington, D.C. and earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from George Washington University and a M.S. in Engineering Management from Catholic University. He's married to Eleanor and they have one daughter, India. They came to Silver Spring in 1989. Jackie serves in worship leadership, information technology for the church and is chairman of the missions committee. He participated in many mission trips to Houlton, ME, Kentville, Nova Scotia, Nags Head, NC, Albania and Thailand. He has oversight for the church office, benevolence, missions, and finances. Jackie retired from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in January 2014. He served 36 years in the federal government (Department of Navy (28 years), Department of Veterans Affairs (3 years) and NASA (5 years) and two years in the private sector (Westinghouse).

 

Cristobal Portillo is in the construction industry. He and his wife Rosa, are natives of El Salvador and have three children Wendy, Jairo, and Romeo. Cristobal has served as a deacon at Silver Spring since 1995 and is a board member of Camp WaMaVa.

Among the ways Earle West serves the church as an elder is the oversight of the educational program. Earle's professional career was spent at Howard University where he was a professor, associate dean of the School of Education, and executive assistant to the VP for academic affairs. Earle and his wife, Tommie Ann, a retired teacher and math specialist with Montgomery County Schools, have a family of four children and ten grandchildren living in New Jersey, Texas, and Oklahoma.

All of their children attended Christian colleges. Among Earle's services to the church is the oversight of the educational program. Tommie Ann coordinates the Bible School program for children.

Deacons

Alfonso Fernandez and his wife, Marisela, are natives of Mexico, and are the parents of Magda, Liliana, and Alfonso, Jr. They have one granddaughter, Delmi. Alfonso is a self-employed painter and general home repairman. They have been members of the Iglesia de Cristo meeting here with us since December, 1987.

Jolón Fulgencio (Summary coming soon)

Ricardo Guzmán is of Salvadoran origin. He placed membership with the Silver Spring Church of Christ in 2000, where he met his wife, Mirna. They were married in 2007. God has blessed them with a daughter Melissa. The Guzmán family enjoys serving in church and is involved in different ministries, such as, educating the youth/teaching, assisting with projector/audio operations, organizes meals for church activities. He also leads and serve communion when needed. Brother Guzmán states “Our pleasure is to serve the Lord”.

José Hernández is married to Patricia Hernandez; they have been members of this church since February 2008. They are both originally from El Salvador, married in March 2002, they have two sons: Jacob Ephraim (9) and Matthew Alexander (7). José has been a resident of the state of Maryland for about 24 years; Patricia’s family immigrated to the US when she was 6 years old. José works for B.F. Saul company/Chevy Chase Bank as an AVP/Benefits Manager, he has been employed there for more than 20 years, before that, he worked for Children Hospital in Washington DC. Patricia is a stay at home Mom, previously she worked for Aspen Systems/Lockheed Martin as a Security Clearance Admin. They both have Associate’s degrees from Montgomery College where they first met. José and Patty are also Realtors with Prudential Pen-Fed Realty. José is currently part of the SSCoC Benevolence Committee; he is also a youth teacher. Also, he assists with the adults’ classes and sermons when needed. Patricia is an Infant teacher in the church’s nursery, and also assists with the Spanish youth classes. Previously, José was a youth leader in another congregation where he also served as a Deacon for about two years.

Andrew Pong is a computer specialist with GEICO. He and his wife, Esther, have two daughters. Andrew supports the Transportation and Grounds ministries.

Arnoldo Velásquez (Summary Coming Soon)

Jonathan Walker Sr. grew up in Hampton, VA, served 4 years as a Marine in California, where he met Easter, who later became his wife and who introduced him to the Lord's church.  They moved to Maryland in 1987 and Jonathan was baptized at the Southeast church (now Beltway).  The Walker family served at District Heights Church of Christ for 16 years, including his service as a deacon.  He is a program manager for METRO and also owns Applied Wireless Local Area Network.  He holds engineering degrees from Howard University and Johns Hopkins University.  The Walkers have two children, Jonathan, Jr., and Janay.  The family placed membership at Silver Spring in 2005.

Administrative Staff

Mary McLean joined the church office staff as a full-time secretary in March 2009. She is active every Sunday as a Bible class teacher for children in Kindergarten to grade 1. She is a widow with two adult children and one grandchild. Originally from Hampton, VA, Mary moved to the DC area in 1962. She worked for C&P/AT&T for twenty-two and a half years. She changed her career to Accounting in 1988. She retired from Ocean Conservancy after fifteen years in 2008. She loves praising the Lord.

Maureen "Kimm" McLean joined the office staff as an Office Assistant August 14, 2013. She is the daughter of Mary McLean. She is a member of College Park Church of Christ. She has an adult son. She has worked in the Medical and Mail fields. She attends the Wednesday evening Bible classes here at Silver Spring.

Custodian

Alfonso Fernandez keeps the building in shape from week to week. He also has his own business, A&M Int/Ext Painting.  Alfonso is one of the congregation's deacons. He is married to Marisela.

Evangelists

Evangelists—preachers—are those who publicly proclaim the good news of God and work to strengthen the churches they serve.

"Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction." - 2 Timothy 4:2

Floyd M. Williamson serves the Silver Spring Church of Christ as a pulpit minister.  He became a Christian in 1970 at Camp WaMaVa and attended the SE Church of Christ, Washington DC until graduating from High School.  Floyd has served as a missionary in Gothenburg, Sweden; missionary-in-residence in Memphis, TN; an evangelist in Oswego, NY; and a pulpit minster in Oxon Hill, MD.  Besides graduating from Northeaster Christian Jr. College and Oklahoma Christian University, Floyd has completed an M.A.R. and M.Div. from the Harding School of Theology, Memphis, TN and a D.Min. from the Howard University School of Divinity, Washington DC.  Floyd and Isabelle were married in the summer of 1977, while he was serving as a summer personal-worker at the Sunset Road church of Christ in Willingboro, NJ.  Isabelle is a Special Victims Assistant for the Office of the Sheriff in Prince George’s County.  She speaks at church related ladies workshops, seminars, and special days.  They have two adult married sons and five grandchildren.  Eric, Jaime, and their sons live in Pottstown, PA, where Eric is a minister.  Carl, Alicia, and their daughters live in Morganville, NJ, where Carl also is a minister.

Elmer Pacheco serves us as the evangelist with the Iglesia de Cristo (church of Christ) at Silver Spring. Bro. Elmer Pacheco has been serving at the Silver Spring church of Christ as our Hispanic evangelist since August 18th, 2003. Before that, he ministered at Lilly Dale church of Christ for 5 years and before that in Monterrey, Mexico for 3 years. Bro. Elmer graduated from Kentucky Christian University and is happily married to his wife, Jenny, who has a degree in Marketing.

Their children are Damaris (’98) and Caleb (’00).
